Most investment portfolios are heavily weighted towards domestic equities, cash and property. The rationale behind this is quite clear as these are the most familiar and tangible asset classes: your bank; your home (and your other property purchases); companies you know and see or read about every day.
However, this is not building a well-diversified portfolio. If you have added some US and European equities and perhaps even Japan, you are at least no longer dependent on the fortunes of your own country. However, the reality is that the correlation of the major equity markets is quite close.
